The T 478.3 series, famously nicknamed "Diving Goggles" or "Spectacle Snake" due to its distinctive front design, was developed and built at CKD in Prague. The first prototypes appeared in 1968, showcasing a bold and recognisable silhouette that would become iconic in Czechoslovak railway history.

A total of 408 locomotives were produced, serving a wide range of duties.
