Details

The SBB Re 4/4III was a small class of Swiss electric locomotives built in the 1970s to meet the demands of routes with steep gradients and tight curves, particularly on the Bözberg line. Only twenty locomotives were constructed, and although they were visually similar to the more numerous Re 4/4II, they were fitted with different gearing and higher tractive effort, making them better suited to heavy freight and demanding routes.

In later years, several locomotives were sold or transferred to private railway operators and renumbered, becoming Re 430 and Re 436 under new ownership. These locomotives continued to see service on freight, infrastructure, and regional duties, often repainted into a variety of operator liveries, extending their working lives well beyond their original Swiss Federal Railways service.
