Details

The locomotives of this class were originally built between 1911 and 1914, when 16 examples were supplied to the former Lower Austrian State Railways for use on the Mariazell Railway, one of Austria’s most important narrow-gauge mountain routes. Designed specifically for the demands of steep gradients and tight curves, these locomotives became a key part of daily passenger and freight operations on the line.

Between 1959 and 1962, the fleet underwent a major modernisation programme. While the original chassis was retained, the locomotives received new bodies and upgraded equipment, extending their working lives and improving reliability. Following rebuilding, the locomotives achieved a top speed of 50 km/h and developed a power output of around 405 kW, making them well suited to continued service on regional and mountain railways.

Because of their long operational history, distinctive appearance, and close association with the scenic Mariazell line, these locomotives remain a popular subject for model railway enthusiasts, particularly those modelling European narrow-gauge or Alpine railways from the early twentieth century through to the late diesel era.
