DR BR174 001 Diesel Railcar IV

At the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1982, the Studenka wagon construction company from the former CSSR exhibited a series M152 railcar on the exhibition grounds alongside other rail vehicles. The German Reichsbahn had been looking for a successor to its BR 171/172 light railcars for some time. The DR then decided to rent this railcar for trial purposes and to test its usability. It was to be given the series number 174.

It was not used immediately by the DR; test runs could only begin several months later in the autumn of 1982 on branch lines in the Halle/Magdeburg area. At the request of the DR, the manufacturer in Ostrava had labelled the railcar as BR 174 001-8 in accordance with the DR's standards. It was able to keep the multi-coloured paintwork for the time being. The trailer, which was delivered a little later, was no longer multi-coloured, but was painted in a simple red.

Due to a foreign trade deficit, the GDR was unable to procure any more railcars in the CSSR and so the rented test vehicles were returned in December 1983.
