The 1988 Lombard RAC Rally was one of the defining gravel and forest stage events of the late Group A era of the FIA World Rally Championship. It took place across the traditional demanding routes of Wales, England, and Scotland. Known for unpredictable weather, deep forest sections, and a very high attrition rate, the event rewarded consistency, mechanical reliability, and precise driving over outright speed.

While the overall event was dominated by top-level Group A machinery of the period, including the winning entry in the 1988 Lombard RAC Rally, the rally also featured a wide range of production-based cars that defined grassroots competition. Among these was the popular Peugeot 205 GTI, entered in lower Group A and Group N categories by privateer teams and club-level drivers.
