The N700 Series Shinkansen is one of Japan’s most iconic high-speed trains, introduced in 2007 for services on the Tokaido and San’yo Shinkansen lines. Built through a collaboration between JR Central and JR West, the type was designed to improve speed, efficiency, and passenger comfort compared with earlier bullet trains. Capable of operating at up to 300 km/h (186 mph), the N700 features advanced acceleration and a tilting system that allows higher speeds through curves, helping reduce journey times on Japan’s busiest high-speed corridor.

Over time, the design evolved into the N700A (“Advanced”) variant, incorporating upgraded braking and safety systems. Both 16-car and shorter 8-car formations exist, giving the class a wide operational range across Japan’s high-speed network.

For model railway collectors and operators, the N700 Series is especially appealing thanks to its distinctive aerodynamic nose, clean white and blue livery, and importance in modern Japanese rail travel. It is an ideal prototype for layouts set from the late 2000s to the present day, representing the backbone of contemporary Shinkansen operations.
