Details

The DB Class V 60 was a highly successful and widely used diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotive introduced in the 1950s for the Deutsche Bundesbahn to replace ageing steam shunters and handle yard, depot and light freight duties on non-electrified lines. Its robust design, strong low-speed tractive effort and easy maintainability made it one of the most dependable shunting types of its era.

Built between 1956 and 1964, the V 60 featured a B'B' wheel arrangement and a reliable diesel engine with hydraulic transmission. The locomotive was designed with a focus on simple mechanics and good visibility for crews, making it especially suited to frequent stop-start work in marshalling yards and industrial sidings. Its compact yet powerful profile allowed it to handle heavy wagons, assist mainline locomotives with train assembly, and perform transfer runs between local yards.

In the 1968 Deutsche Bundesbahn renumbering scheme, the V 60 became Class 260/261, and later Class 360/361 as it moved into service with Deutsche Bahn AG after railway restructuring. Many locomotives were modified with upgrades such as reinforced transmissions and updated controls, extending their operational life well into the 1990s and 2000s. Several units were also adapted for remote control, further enhancing their versatility in dock, yard and industrial applications.
