The Borgward Arabella stands as one of the most ambitious and final passenger car projects of the Borgward Group from Bremen. Introduced in 1959 under the Lloyd brand name, the Arabella was produced in various versions until 1963 and marked a decisive step toward entering the lower middle class of the automotive market. Unlike earlier Lloyd models, it was a completely new design concept, created to deliver higher levels of comfort, refinement, and safety in a compact vehicle format.

A key engineering highlight was its newly developed four-cylinder water-cooled boxer engine, mounted at the front and paired with front-wheel drive—making it the only four-cylinder model ever produced by Lloyd. Following the collapse of the Borgward Group in 1961, limited assembly continued between 1962 and 1963 using remaining parts, resulting in the final Arabella vehicles and closing an important chapter in German automotive history.
