The Ford Transcontinental was a heavy goods vehicle tractor unit built by Ford Europe from 1975 to 1984, with production in Amsterdam and at Foden in Cheshire. It combined bought in components, including a Berliet cab, Cummins diesel engine and Eaton transmission, on a strong chassis designed for long distance haulage. Recognisable by its tall, comfortable cab and powerful 14 litre engine, it was ahead of its time in driver comfort. Although sales were modest due to weight limits in the UK, the Transcontinental is now a rare classic and a favourite among vintage truck enthusiasts and model collectors.
