Â
Atlas Model Railroad Company, Inc. is a prominent American manufacturer specialising in model railroad products across N, HO and O scales. Founded in 1924 by Stephan Schaffan, Sr., the company began as Atlas Tool Company in Newark, New Jersey, initially operating as a general machine shop.Â
In 1933, Stephan Schaffan, Jr., joined the business and, driven by his passion for model aeroplanes, innovated model railroad track components. He developed a "switch kit" that gained popularity, leading to further advancements such as the first practical rail joiner, pre-assembled turnouts and flexible track. These innovations played a significant role in popularising model railroading as a mass-market hobby.Â
Over the years, Atlas expanded its product line to include locomotives, rolling stock, structures and accessories. The company is renowned for its high-quality flex track and offers track in codes 55, 80, 83 and 100. Their locomotives and rolling stock are noted for prototypical details and smooth operation.Â
Today, Atlas remains a family-owned business headquartered in Hillside, New Jersey, continuing its tradition of quality and innovation in the model railroading industry.
