Class 313 201 3 Car EMU Southern Blue/Grey Retro
The EFE Rail Class 313/314 model is a superbly detailed three-car unit showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and accuracy. Each vehicle features precision-moulded bodyshells with separately fitted detailing parts, intricate underframe components and fine pipework, capturing the character of the original trains in impressive detail.
Power is delivered through the centre car, which houses a robust diecast metal chassis and a coreless motor driving both bogies for smooth, reliable operation and excellent traction. This car also includes a Plux22 DCC decoder socket, allowing easy digital control. Electrically conductive close couplings connect all three vehicles, ensuring that a single decoder manages both motors and the lighting functions across the entire unit.

Details
The Class 313 and Class 314 electric multiple units were direct developments of British Rail’s experimental ‘Standard Suburban Train’ project of the early 1970s. This programme produced the innovative 2-PEP and 4-PEP prototypes, which went on to inspire the entire ‘PEP family’ of suburban units. The Class 313s were the first production members of this family, marking a major technological step forward in British suburban rail travel.
Built by British Rail Engineering Limited at York Works between 1976 and 1977, the Class 313 fleet comprised 64 three-car units. They were the first ‘dual-mode’ EMUs capable of operating under both 25kV AC overhead and 750V DC third rail systems, serving the Great Northern Inner Suburban lines from London Moorgate before later being deployed more widely.
The Class 314s followed two years later, with just 16 three-car units also built at York. These were designed for operation solely on 25kV AC overhead lines and entered service on the newly opened Argyle Line in Scotland. Both classes became key parts of Britain’s suburban rail network, combining technical innovation with reliable daily service, and remain iconic examples of British Rail engineering excellence.
