Historical Background

Originally constructed by Robert Hudson Ltd as ammunition wagons for use by the Royal Air Force, these robust four-wheel wooden-bodied wagons were designed to withstand demanding service while carrying a wide variety of loads. Their practical drop side design allowed for faster loading and unloading, making them well suited to military depots and industrial railways.

Following their military service, a number of these wagons were acquired by the Ffestiniog Railway and other preserved narrow gauge lines, where they were adapted for general traffic and engineering duties. Their durability and versatility ensured they remained useful for transporting maintenance materials, ballast and supplies, making them a familiar sight on preservation-era narrow gauge railways and a popular prototype for OO9 modellers.
