Historical Background

The Daimler SP250, originally launched in 1959 and commonly known as the Daimler Dart, is one of Britain’s most distinctive post-war sports cars. Produced by Daimler Company, the SP250 combined lightweight fibreglass body construction with advanced engineering and strong performance, helping it stand out in the competitive sports car market of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Powered by a 2.5-litre Hemi-head V8 engine producing around 140 bhp, the Daimler Dart offered impressive speed for its era, capable of reaching over 120 mph. Unlike many British sports cars of the period, the SP250 used fibreglass body panels mounted on a separate chassis, reducing weight and improving performance. Its styling was bold and unconventional, featuring dramatic tail fins, chrome detailing, and a distinctive front grille that made it instantly recognisable.

Although officially named the SP250, the car became widely known as the “Dart”, a name originally intended by Daimler before trademark concerns in the United States led to the alternative designation. Production continued until 1964, with just over 2,600 examples built, making surviving models highly desirable among classic car enthusiasts and collectors today.
