Historical Background
The Daimler Fleetline is one of the most important British double-decker buses of the late 20th century and became a familiar sight across towns and cities throughout the United Kingdom. Introduced in 1960 by Daimler Company, the Fleetline was designed with a rear-mounted engine and rear entrance layout, helping bus operators modernise fleets and improve passenger flow during a major period of change in public transport.
Built primarily as a chassis for bodywork supplied by manufacturers such as Park Royal, MCW, Roe, and Northern Counties, the Daimler Fleetline was widely adopted by municipal transport operators including Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, and London Transport. Its modern rear-engine design provided quieter operation and greater interior space compared with earlier front-engined buses, making it a popular and practical choice for busy urban routes.
One of the most famous versions was the London Transport DMS class, introduced during the 1970s, which brought the Fleetline into the capital on a large scale. Although operational challenges limited its long-term success in London, the Fleetline remained highly successful nationwide and became one of Britain’s defining double-decker buses of the era.
