Details

The British Rail Mk3 coach was introduced in 1975 to provide higher comfort and modern standards for long-distance travel, responding to growing competition from airlines and private cars. Designed and built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL), Mk3 coaches were initially intended as locomotive-hauled stock but were soon adapted for High Speed Train (HST) operation at speeds up to 125 mph (220 km/h). The first Mk3 prototype coaches were built in 1972, with ten vehicles constructed for early HST trials, and production continued until 1988, with multiple-unit variants extending into the early 1990s.

At 75 ft (23 m) long, Mk3 coaches are ten feet longer than the preceding Mk2 design and feature monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin, providing strength and a sleek, aerodynamic profile. Operators such as Virgin Trains ran these coaches with HST power cars, with later transfers to Abellio Greater Anglia after the introduction of Pendolino trains.
