Details

The British Rail Mk3 coach was introduced in 1975 to deliver enhanced comfort and modern standards for long-distance rail travel, addressing rising competition from airlines and private cars. Designed and built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL), Mk3 coaches were initially intended for locomotive-hauled services but were quickly adapted for High Speed Train (HST) operation at speeds of up to 125 mph (220 km/h). The first Mk3 prototype coaches were built in 1972, with ten vehicles produced for early HST trials, and production continued until 1988, with multiple-unit variants based on the Mk3 shell appearing into the early 1990s.

At 75 ft (23 m) in length, Mk3 coaches are ten feet longer than the previous Mk2 design and feature monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin, providing both strength and sleek aerodynamic styling. Operators including Virgin Trains ran these coaches with HST power cars, with later transfers to Abellio Greater Anglia following the introduction of Pendolino trains.

This OO gauge model coach replicates the ‘TRSB’ (Trailer Restaurant Second Buffet) variant, complete with second-class seating at tables and a fully fitted buffet counter.
