Details

The British Rail Mk4 coach was built between 1989 and 1992 by Metro-Cammell at Washwood Heath for the newly-electrified InterCity 225 services on the East Coast Main Line. A total of 282 carriages were produced to operate in 30 fixed nine-car formations, paired with Class 91 locomotives and a Driving Van Trailer at the opposite end, allowing push-pull operation without turning the locomotive.

Mk4 coaches were a significant evolution of the Mk3 design, featuring an all-steel body, fully sealed gangways, and controlled emission toilets (CETs). One of the most notable improvements was the introduction of automatic push-button operated plug doors, replacing the manually-operated slam doors of earlier coaches. Body shells were constructed by BREL and Breda in Milan, combining strength with modern styling and passenger convenience.

These coaches served successive East Coast Main Line operators including GNER, East Coast, and LNER, before being gradually replaced by Class 801 ‘Azuma’ trains from 2019/20. Refurbished examples now operate with Transport for Wales on premier services.

This OO gauge model coach represents the ‘TSE’ (Tourist Standard End) variant, designed to sit next to the locomotive with a single corridor connector, and features highly detailed bodyshells, gangways, and realistic underframe components, perfect for recreating modern East Coast Main Line formations on a model railway layout.
