Details
The British Rail Mk4 coach was built between 1989 and 1992 by Metro-Cammell at Washwood Heath for the newly-electrified InterCity 225 services on the East Coast Main Line. A total of 282 carriages were produced to operate in 30 fixed nine-car formations, each paired with a Class 91 locomotive and a Driving Van Trailer, allowing push-pull operation without the need to turn the train.
The Mk4 design introduced significant upgrades over the Mk3, including all-steel construction, automatic push-button operated plug doors, fully sealed gangways, and controlled emission toilets (CETs). Body shells were built by BREL and Breda in Milan, combining strength, modern styling, and enhanced passenger comfort.
These coaches were operated by successive East Coast Main Line companies including GNER, East Coast, and LNER, before being gradually replaced by Class 801 ‘Azuma’ trains from 2019/20. Refurbished examples now operate with Transport for Wales, including the Holyhead–Cardiff premier service.
This OO gauge model coach replicates a standard class buffet coach, featuring table seating and a fully fitted buffet serving counter. With highly detailed bodyshells, underframe equipment, and gangways, it is perfect for recreating modern East Coast Main Line formations on realistic model railway layouts.
