Details
British Rail introduced the production version of the Mk3 coach in 1975, offering enhanced comfort to compete with airlines and rising car travel.
Designed and built by BREL, they were initially intended as locomotive-hauled stock but were quickly adapted for use with the High Speed Train (HST), capable of speeds up to 125Â mph (220Â km/h). The first Mk3 coaches were actually built in 1972, with ten coaches produced for the prototype HST.
Production of Mk3 coaches continued until 1988, with multiple units based on the Mk3 body shell built into the early 1990s. Each coach is 75Â ft (23Â m) long, ten feet longer than the Mk2, and features monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin.
GWR-liveried Mk3 coaches were formed into full-length HST sets and, from 2019, into four-car Castle sets, which operated until May 2024.
This RailRoad OO gauge model represents a First Class Open coach in GWR livery, faithfully capturing the design and detailing of the real Mk3 carriage.
