Details
British Rail introduced the production version of the Mk3 coach in 1975, offering higher standards of comfort to compete with airlines and growing private car use.
Designed and built by BREL, these coaches were initially intended as locomotive-hauled stock but were quickly adapted for the High Speed Train (HST), capable of speeds up to 125Â mph (220Â km/h). The first Mk3 coaches were built in 1972, with ten coaches produced for the prototype HST.
Production continued until 1988, with multiple units based on the Mk3 body shell built into the early 1990s. Each coach measures 75 ft (23 m)—ten feet longer than its Mk2 predecessor—and features monocoque construction with an all-welded mild steel stressed skin.
GWR-liveried Mk3 coaches were formed into full-length HST sets, and from 2019 were also operated in four-car GWR ‘Castle’ sets, which ran until May 2024.
This RailRoad OO gauge model represents a Buffet Car in GWR livery, capturing the design and detailing of the original carriage.
