Following on from the Mk3, the Mk4 coaches were built between 1989 and 1992 at Metro-Cammell’s Washwood Heath facility for the newly electrified InterCity 225 services on the East Coast Main Line.

A total of 282 carriages were produced to maintain a fleet of 30 fixed nine-car formations, each operating with a Class 91 locomotive at one end and a Driving Van Trailer (DVT) at the other, allowing trains to run in both directions without turning.

The Mk4 features an all-steel design with multiple improvements over the Mk3, most notably automatic push-button plug-type doors replacing manually operated slam doors. The body shells, built by BREL and Breda (Milan), also incorporate fully sealed gangways and controlled emission toilets (CETs).

This OO gauge coach model is a highly detailed replica of a Second Class Trailer Second (TS) open coach in BR InterCity livery, accurately reflecting the interior layout and external finish of the original vehicles.
