Details

Bring classic pre-grouping Southern Railway heritage to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 LSWR Class A1 “Terrier”, running number 735. This highly detailed model represents one of Britain’s most famous small tank locomotives, originally built for the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway and later transferred to the London & South Western Railway for secondary duties and branch line work.

The A1 “Terrier” class was designed by William Stroudley and built between 1872 and 1880, with just 50 locomotives produced. Despite their compact size, these engines became known for excellent acceleration and reliability, making them ideal for suburban passenger services, light freight, and branch line operations across tightly curved routes. Several examples were later rebuilt into A1X variants for extended service life.

This model depicts No. 735 in LSWR service, finished in the distinctive LSWR green livery with black and white lining, reflecting its early 20th-century appearance after transfer from the LB&SCR. It is ideal for Era 2 layouts and brings authentic pre-grouping Southern railway character to TT:120 layouts.

This model features finely moulded tank and boiler detailing, accurately reproduced cab proportions, and separately applied fittings that capture the distinctive Stroudley design. Its small footprint makes it ideal for compact TT layouts, rural branch lines, and early suburban railway scenes.

It pairs naturally with period-appropriate rolling stock such as 4-wheel coaches and short freight wagons, making it well suited for recreating early Southern Railway and pre-grouping operations.

Historical Background

Originally built for the LB&SCR between 1872 and 1880, the A1 “Terrier” class was designed to handle intensive suburban traffic in London. Their lightweight construction and rapid acceleration made them ideal for frequent-stop passenger services.

Two locomotives were sold to the LSWR in 1903, where No. 735 was used on branch lines including the Lyme Regis and Chard routes before being reassigned to lighter duties. Like many Terriers, it demonstrated remarkable longevity, with several members of the class surviving into preservation due to their versatility and durability.
