Details
Recreate the charm of early British railway travel with the Hornby LSWR 4 Wheel 3rd Class Coach No. 302 (TT4079), produced in TT:120 scale (1:120).
Finished in traditional LSWR brown livery, this four-wheel 3rd class coach represents the humble passenger accommodation used across the London & South Western Railway network during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. These compact coaches were commonly used on branch lines and rural services, where tight curves and lighter traffic made short wheelbase stock essential.
Designed for pre-grouping TT:120 layouts, this model captures the character of early British railways and pairs perfectly with other LSWR coaching stock for authentic period formations.
Historical Background
The London and South Western Railway (LSWR) operated extensive fleets of four-wheel coaching stock during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These vehicles were a standard feature of early British railway passenger services before the widespread adoption of bogie coaches.
Four-wheel coaches were primarily used on branch lines and secondary routes, where infrastructure limitations such as tight curves and lighter track construction made smaller rolling stock essential. Their short wheelbase allowed them to be hauled by smaller locomotives, making them ideal for rural and lightly used services.
Third class accommodation at the time was very basic, typically consisting of compartment seating with minimal comfort compared to higher classes. Lighting was usually provided by oil lamps, and access was often via step boards due to low platform heights.
As railway technology advanced into the early 20th century, four-wheel coaches were gradually replaced by longer, more comfortable bogie stock. However, they remained in service for many years on secondary routes before eventual withdrawal.
Today, LSWR four-wheel coaches are an important representation of early British railway development and remain popular for pre-grouping and Victorian-era model railway layouts.
