The British Rail Mark 3 coaching stock was developed in the late 1960s as part of a major modernisation programme aimed at improving long-distance passenger services across the UK.

Introduced with the InterCity 125 High Speed Train (HST) in 1976, Mk3 coaches represented a significant engineering leap over earlier Mk2 stock.
