Details
Add essential operational realism to your British Rail passenger formations with the Hornby BR Mk1 Brake Second Corridor Coach M35147 (TT4077A), produced in TT:120 scale (1:120).
Finished in the classic British Rail blue and grey livery, this Mk1 Brake Second Corridor (BSK) coach combines second-class passenger seating with a dedicated guard’s compartment and luggage space. It is typically positioned at either end of a train formation, making it a vital component for creating authentic BR-era passenger rakes.
Designed for seamless integration with other Hornby TT:120 rolling stock, this model offers finely detailed bodywork, accurate proportions, and smooth running performance suitable for both display and operation.
Historical Background
The British Railways Mark 1 coaching stock was introduced in 1951 as the first standardised passenger carriage design following nationalisation of Britain’s railways in 1948.
At that time, British Railways inherited a wide variety of incompatible rolling stock from the former “Big Four” railway companies. The Mk1 design was developed to create a unified, modern, and safer fleet suitable for use across the entire network.
Between 1951 and 1963, Mk1 coaches were built in large numbers at BR workshops including Derby, Swindon, Doncaster, York, Wolverton, and Eastleigh. They used a strong all-steel body mounted on a robust underframe, significantly improving crashworthiness compared with earlier wooden-bodied stock.
The Brake Second Corridor (BSK) variant combined passenger accommodation with a guard’s compartment and luggage space. This made it one of the most widely used coach types in BR service, appearing in almost all passenger formations from express trains to secondary services.
Mk1 coaches became the backbone of British Rail operations throughout the 1950s and 1960s and remained in widespread use for decades. Many examples survived into the late 20th century, with some still preserved and operational on heritage railways today.
