KATO continues to grow its British high-speed portfolio with the introduction of two standout additions from the Hitachi AT300 family, bringing both bi-mode and fully electric operation to the forefront. Covering the TransPennine Express Class 802/2 and Lumo-operated Class 803, these new models showcase modern intercity travel in distinctive liveries, from the metallic finish of the “Nova 1” fleet to Lumo’s bold blue branding. With versions available in analogue, DCC-fitted and DCC-sound formats, modellers have the flexibility to choose the setup that best suits their layout while enjoying the latest in high-speed modelling.
TransPennine Express Hitachi Class 802/2
Following the success of the GWR and LNER Class 800 models, the Class 802/2 represents the next step in KATO’s British range. Based on the Hitachi-built Class 802, these units are an evolution of the Class 800 design, featuring increased diesel power and larger fuel tanks to support longer journeys beyond electrified routes. Operated by TransPennine Express, the “Nova 1” fleet connects key cities including Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh, combining performance with a sleek, modern appearance.

Lumo Hitachi Class 803
Alongside the 802, the Class 803 brings a different approach to high-speed operation, as a fully electric variant designed exclusively for electrified lines. Featuring an all-standard-class configuration with no onboard galley, these units are built for efficient, high-capacity travel. Operated solely by Lumo on services between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley, they stand out with their bold blue livery and prominent branding, further enhanced by recent updates to front-end detailing and contemporary promotional graphics.
