Kato USA Announce New ES44AC Locomotives

Kato’s latest release brings the power and innovation of GE Transportation’s Evolution Series (ES) locomotives to life, complete with a range of eye-catching special liveries. Originally developed to meet the U.S. EPA’s Tier 2 emissions standards introduced in 2005, these modern locomotives combine environmental responsibility with performance. Featuring AC traction motors and the efficient GEVO-12 engine; a 12-cylinder powerhouse matching the output of its 16-cylinder predecessor, the ES44s also sport a signature oversized radiator, a result of their redesigned air-to-air dual-fan heat exchanger.

This release includes a diverse selection of commemorative and heritage schemes. Among them is Canadian Pacific #8757, the “Every Child Matters” locomotive, unveiled on September 30th, 2021—Orange Shirt Day and Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Painted in vivid orange, it honours Indigenous children affected by the Residential School system and serves as a powerful tribute to their memory.

Also featured is CP #8781, the first locomotive to bear Hapag-Lloyd branding, celebrating the partnership between CP and the global shipping giant. Fans of American railroads will also appreciate the newly decorated CSX units, which pay homage to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Seaboard System Railroad. Rounding out the lineup is Union Pacific #5395, proudly displaying the American flag, a bold symbol of heritage and national pride.
