Rapido Trains UK Announce New Ammo Nitrate/Chemical Tank Wagons

Rapido Trains UK have announced new NSFF Ammonium Nitrate / Chemical Tank (OO Gauge). These conical tank wagons were built during the First World War to carry chemicals used in the construction of shells before being sold off for use as chemical tank wagons. Engineering Prototypes have already arrived and been evaluated.

During WWI, the Ministry of Munitions relied heavily on railways to transport hazardous materials like ammonium nitrate, used in shell production. In 1916, 100 specialised 10-ton powder tank wagons were built by The Leeds Forge Company for this purpose. Airtight and conically shaped, these wagons prevented moisture ingress and allowed easy unloading via a hinged end door.
