Description

Turntable

The Atlas N Scale Turntable is a compact, fully assembled 7.5 inch diameter turntable designed for realistic locomotive turning and engine depot operations in N gauge layouts. Built for smooth manual control and precise indexing, it is an ideal centrepiece for small yards, steam-era servicing facilities, and space-efficient engine sheds.

This N scale version delivers the same operational realism as its HO counterpart but in a smaller footprint suited to 1:160 layouts. It features 21 indexed track positions spaced at 15-degree intervals, allowing locomotives to be accurately aligned with multiple stall tracks or roundhouse bays. A built-in Geneva movement ensures the table locks firmly into place at each position, improving reliability during operation and reducing alignment issues.

The turntable comes fully assembled and is designed for easy surface mounting, meaning no baseboard cutting is required. It can be operated manually using the integrated crank system or upgraded later with an optional motor drive unit for automated or DCC-controlled operation.

The moulded bridge deck features a realistic wood-style finish, while the surrounding pit is detailed in concrete grey, helping it blend naturally into both modern and steam-era depot scenes.

Features:

  • 7.5 inch fully assembled N scale (1:160) turntable
  • 21 indexed positions at 15-degree increments
  • Geneva mechanism ensures precise locking alignment
  • Manual crank operation with optional motorisation upgrade
  • Realistic wood-effect bridge and concrete pit detailing
  • Surface mount design, no baseboard cutting required

Why Turntables Are Useful on a Model Railway

Turntables play an important role in both real railways and model railway operations, particularly in steam-era or mixed-era layouts.

In full-size railway practice, locomotives often needed to be turned because many steam engines were designed to run optimally in one direction. Turntables allowed railways to rotate engines within tight depot spaces without requiring large loop tracks. They also enabled efficient access to multiple engine shed roads radiating from a single central point.

On an N scale layout, the benefits are even more practical due to limited space. A turntable allows you to:

  • Turn locomotives realistically in a very small footprint
  • Connect multiple storage and maintenance tracks efficiently
  • Replace large reversing loops or complex track geometry
  • Create a visually impressive engine depot focal point

Because N scale layouts often operate in confined spaces, the Atlas turntable becomes a highly effective way to add both operational variety and realism without consuming large areas of trackwork.
