Details
Add authentic departmental and engineering railway operations to your layout with the Hornby TT:120 BR Civil Engineers Class 31/1, running number 31219. This highly detailed model represents the Brush Type 2 locomotive in its distinctive Civil Engineers (Dutch) livery, widely used across British Rail for engineering, maintenance, and infrastructure services.
The Class 31 was introduced in 1957 as part of British Railways’ Modernisation Plan, with 263 locomotives built by Brush Traction. Designed as a versatile mixed-traffic diesel, the class was used across freight, passenger, and departmental duties for decades. As they aged, many locomotives were transferred to departmental roles, where they became essential for engineering trains, ballast work, and infrastructure support.
This model depicts locomotive 31219 in Civil Engineers “Dutch” livery, reflecting its later BR departmental use. It is ideal for Era 8–9 layouts and adds operational variety to TT:120 layouts focused on infrastructure, maintenance, and engineering traffic.
This model features finely moulded bodyshell detailing, accurate A1A-A1A wheel arrangement, and separately applied components typical of the Brush Type 2 design. Its versatility makes it suitable for engineering trains, ballast workings, and departmental duties across TT layouts.
It pairs naturally with engineering wagons, ballast hoppers, and departmental stock, making it ideal for realistic infrastructure and maintenance scenes.
Historical Background
The Class 31 was originally built for mixed-traffic duties under British Railways’ diesel modernisation programme. Over time, as newer locomotives entered service, many Class 31s were reassigned to departmental roles within British Rail.
In Civil Engineers service, locomotives like 31219 were used for infrastructure maintenance, track renewal, and engineering trains. The distinctive yellow and grey “Dutch” livery became synonymous with BR engineering operations during the 1980s and 1990s.
