Main Lines: 4th July 2026
Welcome to this week's Main Lines.
It's been another busy week across the UK's rail network, with several major projects and industry developments making the headlines.
Network Rail has announced essential engineering work between Newport and Shrewsbury, with upgrades planned for the weekend of 11–12 July to improve reliability and performance on this important route. Passengers travelling through the area are advised to check before they travel.
In the heritage sector, the National Railway Museum has welcomed home the historic locomotive Columbine after an impressive conservation move from Shildon to York. The return of one of Britain's oldest surviving locomotives is a significant milestone for railway preservation enthusiasts.
On the Tyne and Wear Metro, the Royal train that carried Queen Elizabeth II during the system's official opening in 1981 has been donated to the North East Land, Sea and Air Museum, ensuring this unique piece of railway history will remain on public display for future generations.
Elsewhere, Cambridge South station welcomed its first passenger impressions ahead of opening preparations, while accessibility improvements continue at Tenby station and work has begun on the transformation of Cardiff Central station.
