Märklin has unveiled a striking new set of announcements celebrating classic American railroading, headlined by a completely new-tooling model of the Southern Pacific “Coffin” Berkshire 2-8-4 steam locomotive. Representing locomotive SP No. 3505, the model captures one of the more unusual Berkshire designs and is offered with factory-fitted sound for Märklin’s AC system. The Berkshire wheel arrangement marked a major milestone in freight locomotive development, combining four driving axles with leading and trailing axles to improve curve running, allow for a larger boiler and firebox, and deliver greater power and speed—an engineering evolution that helped railroads meet the demands of America’s rapidly expanding freight network.
To complement the locomotive, Märklin has also announced a Southern Pacific mixed freight wagon set and a matching Southern Pacific caboose, enabling modellers to assemble a prototypical American freight consist behind the impressive Berkshire. Together, these new releases recreate the atmosphere of mid-century US railroading and provide collectors and operators with a cohesive themed train built around this distinctive locomotive design.
