Details
Introduced in 1937, the West Riding Limited was created by the London and North Eastern Railway following the success of its streamlined express services. Designed to operate between London King's Cross railway station and Bradford, the train used a specially built set of carriages closely based on those of the famous Coronation trains. The formation included four twin articulated coach pairs, each sharing a bogie to reduce friction, improve ride quality, and deliver smooth high-speed running.
The inaugural run took place on 27 September 1937, hauled by the streamlined LNER Class A4 No. 4492 Dominion of New Zealand, achieving an impressive average speed of over 63 mph. Services were suspended during the Second World War but returned in 1949, and the West Riding name continues in use today on modern services.
These OO gauge articulated coaches accurately reproduce the distinctive paired design of the prototype. Coaches ‘A’ and ‘B’ in this set represent vehicles that included a third-class brake with guard’s accommodation and a third-class coach with kitchen, making them ideal for recreating authentic LNER express train formations. With fine detailing and realistic proportions, they are a perfect addition to any pre-war or early BR-era model railway layout.
