Details

The London and North Eastern Railway built two distinctive ‘beaver tail’ observation cars for its prestigious Coronation service, which operated between London and Edinburgh along the East Coast Main Line. Designed to complement the streamlined LNER Class A4 at the head of the train, the observation cars featured an elegant tapered rear end that mirrored the locomotive’s aerodynamic styling.

Passengers paid a supplement to travel in the luxurious observation saloon, where they could relax in individual armchairs while refreshments were served by a steward. The famous ‘beaver tail’ car was typically attached during the summer months, adding an extra touch of prestige to this flagship express.

Both original vehicles have survived into preservation, with Car 1729 carefully restored to its original streamlined profile.
